GARAGE CONVERSION DESIGN

When we think about garage conversion design it helps to keep an open mind as there are many types of garages and they are not all attached to the house.

For example, we’re looking at a detached garage above which has been converted into a studio of sorts and I have to say I wouldn’t mind having it in my garden.

In terms of garage conversion design the most important factor is to ensure that whatever you do, it blends in well with the property and if possible improves it. If you follow this simple rule then you will add excellent value to the price of your property.

GARAGE CONVERSION DESIGN 2Good external design is essential and if you do the job well, most people won’t even realise that you converted the garage. As for the interior, you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to determining what you want to convert your garage to. The most popular garage conversions options are:

In fact there are many more options available to you which include Granny Flat, Computer Room. Sauna, Spa, Bathroom, Laundry Room and even a Storage Room.

As for the exterior design of the garage, if you remove a garage door, make sure you do the infill with bricks that accurately match the existing brickwork. I’ve seen far two many garage conversions where the infill was done with block and rendering or even cladding and it looks absolutely awful so don’t be tempted to look for an easier option. As for windows, the same rules apply. Make sure any new windows accurately match up with existing windows.

As for the garage roof, assuming your garage is attached or semi-detached, you should know that a pitched roof generally looks better, especially if it is hipped, pitched to the front side and rear.

On the design of the interior it is always wise to use finishing materials similar to those used in the main property. Doors, door handles, architraves and skirting boards should match up.

When it comes to flooring, then once again match up with flooring in the main property but if you do want to do something different then make sure it blends in with existing flooring finishes.

Lastly, like most garages, you probably have a concrete ramp leading straight into the garage. if this is the case, consider breaking up the concrete just before the garage to create a flower border or to pop in a few plants or shrubs. The aim is to help conceal the fact that the garage was converted and make everything look natural.
